History of the
Christmas Advent Calendar
History of the Advent Calendar

As a child, Gerhard Lang’s mother had made him a basic advent calendar so
that he could count down the days until Christmas. She placed 24 sweets onto
a piece of cardboard and each day the young Gerhard would take and eat a
sweet. When he grew up Gerhard Lang made the first printed advent calendar
in 1908.

Later, in 1946, we see Richard Sellmer producing calendars in
Germany. The US authorities had to grant him a license in the now post war
Germany which led to his advent calendars becoming known and indeed very
popular in the USA.History Advent Calendar

Sellmer’s first advent calendar was called ‘The Little Town’. The
calendar had pictures of many buildings in the town and you would open the
windows and the doors to find nice things underneath for each day of advent.

By
the end of the 1950s, chocolate advent calendars had appeared, and by the
following decade they had become widespread.

The bioigraphy of Eleonore Duse may at first only grab the attention of Theatre History Buffs, but is an interesting read for everyone, even if you do not know anything about theatre. A great read and you can read it in its entirety for free :) The biography of a theatre legend. Magical, dramatic, hard to put down :)

As I turned the TV yesterday, the following was playing…..

Front CoverAutobiography of a Face is a recount of the author’s childhood experience and sufferings due to cancer. A wonderful read that will stay with you.

Front Cover The Perfume by Patrick Susskind is probably one of my all time favorite books. The theme, time period, and little blurp teasing the potential reader about the story didn’t entice me at all initially. But eventually I let a friend persuade me and read it… lol… All I can say is WOW. Love the author’s twisted thinking and am still amazed to this day on his ability to describe scents for pages. I also highly recommend his other book: THE PIGEON!

Holidays on Ice: StoriesDavid Sedaris’ short stories are always fun to ready. My fave of his is the SANTA LAND DIARIES which is included in the Holidays on Ice story collection. A must read!!! And be sure not to wet your pants … due to laughing hysterically… lol

Front Cover The Magus. A feast of a read! Click HERE to peek.

Front Cover By the river Piedra I sat down and wept by Paulo Coelho is probably my favorite of his books. Love it!

A friend of mine introduced me to an interesting site – a site that guides you through several screens (a visual questionaire) to assess your personality. Its fun and I love the way the results are presented. (A little notebook that you can post on your blog/site..
